Time is not on our side. Some wait for years; many die while waiting. The average wait time is five years or more for a kidney from a deceased donor. However, there is another option: receiving a kidney from a living donor. Asking a family member or a friend to consider donating a kidney to me is difficult, but it greatly improves my chances of getting a transplant.

A living kidney donation typically lasts longer and has better function. Understandably, some people are afraid about the surgery and what living with one kidney will mean for them. Understanding that there are two types or buckets of funds, restricted and unrestricted, is the first step in getting this right. Restricted Funds: These are funds that are set aside for a particular purpose.

Funds that are permanently restricted are usually meant to be saved or invested in an endowment fund, the interest earnings of which can be used for a particular activity or general operations.

This is not a trivial matter. Donors can take legal action against a nonprofit that it believes is misusing restricted donations.

This money typically goes toward normal operating costs. So, how does money get restricted?
